What are HSA and FSA Accounts?
HSA (Health Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) are both savings accounts you can take advantage of for medical expenses. They function similarly to medical insurance in that they pay for health-related expenses, so it’s easy to assume that HSA and FSA dollars are to be spent on more serious health concerns. However, the accounts cover a wide range of medical expenses, including eye exams, prescription eyeglasses, and eye surgery.
HSA can be established by an employer or individual but must be created alongside a qualified high deductible health plan, while FSA is started by an employer but can be used in conjunction with any kind of health insurance although coverage is not required. Both HSA and FSA funds are pre-tax dollars so contributions are not counted toward your taxable income.
An important thing to remember about the two is that HSA funds roll over year after year while FSA dollars expire at the end of each year. Don’t let your HSA or FSA dollars go to waste!
